Power

Power is the ability to act or produce an effect.

Elected Power: Power given to a person who will then represent others' beliefs and opinions.

Appointed Power: Power that comes from being in a certain position, job or role.

Personal Power: A kind of power that each of us has the ability to develop within ourselves. Someone with personal power knows how to decide what's right for him/her, has a sense of his/her own values, is a good listener and communicator, and has the respect of others.

How leaders behave:
They accept people as they are.
They approach relationships and problems in terms of the present rather than the past.
They treat people close to them with the same courteous attention they give to strangers.
They have the ability to trust others, even if the risk seems great.
They have the ability to do without constant approval and recognition from others.

When working with others:
Be a good listener.
Praise in public/criticize in private.
Be considerate.
Share credit.
Show genuine interest in others.
Make requests instead of demands.
Involve people in projects in the early stages.
Remember the leader sets the tone.
Be consistent.
Be positive.
Expect people to do their best.
Ask others for help.
When you make a mistake, admit it.
Keep people informed.
Build other people up.
Use your humor to amuse, not to abuse.
